War and Peace (Russian Война и мир, Voyna i mir; in original orthography Война и миръ, Voyna i mir) is a monumental epic by Leo Tolstoy, first published between 1865 and 1869 in Russki Vestnik. This extraordinary novel delves into the intricacies of Russian society during the tumultuous Napoleonic Era. Regarded as one of Tolstoys two major masterpieces—alongside Anna Karenina—its also celebrated as one of the greatest novels in literary history. War and Peace introduces a rich tapestry of characters intertwined in a narrative that explores not only the grand themes suggested by its title but also the profound issues of youth, aging, and marriage. While it is often categorized as a novel today, it defied many conventions of its time, leading contemporary critics to question its classification. Tolstoy himself viewed Anna Karenina (1878) as his first true foray into the European novel form.
