The Balkans: a jagged peninsula where continents collide, empires crumble, and the fate of Europe is forged. From the Illyrian tribes and Roman province of Illyricum to the Byzantine 'shatter zone' after the Fourth Crusade, this region has been a crossroads of civilizations. Join hosts Lucas and Luna as they unravel the story of the Balkans, tracing the rise of the Bulgarian Empire under Tsar Simeon I, the Serbian zenith of Stefan Dušan, and the centuries-long Ottoman domination that reshaped faith, language, and identity. They explore the pivotal Battle of Kosovo (1389), the long shadow of the 'Millet' system, and the explosive 19th-century national awakenings that led to the Balkan Wars and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo—the spark that ignited World War I. The narrative continues through the turbulent 20th century: the interwar Kingdom of Yugoslavia, the brutal Partisan and Chetnik conflicts, Tito's socialist federation, and the violent breakup of the 1990s, including the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica genocide. Along the way, Lucas and Luna examine how geography, religion (Orthodox, Catholic, Islam), and great-power rivalries (Austria-Hungary, Russia, the Ottoman Empire) conspired to make the Balkans a perpetual 'powder keg.' They also delve into cultural legacies: the epic poetry of gusle players, the soaring stone bridges of Mostar, and the unique syncretic traditions of Bogomilism and the Bosnian Church. Why does this small region still shape global headlines? This show offers a sweeping, nuanced tour through the Balkans' layered past—where every mountain pass holds a story of resistance, and every city square bears the weight of history.#Balkans #History #WorldHistory #FexingoHistory #Podcast #OttomanEmpire #ByzantineEmpire #Yugoslavia #BattleOfKosovo #ArchdukeFranzFerdinand #Illyrians #Srebrenica #Tito #Sarajevo #BalkanWars #Mostar #Gusle #TreatyOfBerlinKeep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
