Where can you listen?

The Sassanian Empire, the last great Persian state before the Islamic conquests, ruled from 224 to 651 CE and stretched from Mesopotamia to the Indus. Hosts Lucas and Luna explore its full arc: from Ardashir I's overthrow of the Parthians to the catastrophic Battle of al-Qadisiyyah. They examine the empire's Zoroastrian state religion, its rigid class system, and its epic wars with Rome and Byzantium — including the capture of Emperor Valerian and Khosrow I's 'Immortals.' Along the way, they discuss the Silk Road trade, the spread of Manichaeism, the rise of a Persian literary tradition, and the architectural marvels of Ctesiphon and Naqsh-e Rostam. Why does the Sassanian legacy matter? It shaped early Islamic administration, influenced art from China to Spain, and preserved ancient Iranian identity. Lucas and Luna also tackle historiographical debates: was the empire truly 'feudal,' or more centralized than often thought? Did Khosrow II's overreach doom the state, or was internal decay the culprit? From the reforms of Kavad I to the fall of Yazdegerd III, this show offers a nuanced portrait of a civilization that bridged antiquity and the medieval world.#SassanianEmpire #PersianHistory #Zoroastrianism #ArdashirI #KhosrowI #Ctesiphon #RomanPersianWars #Manichaeism #NaqshERostam #SilkRoad #YazdegerdIII #BattleOfAlQadisiyyah #AncientIran #Mesopotamia #ImperialPower #RiseAndFall #History #FexingoHistoryKeep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
