Where can you listen?

Cyprus, the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, has been a coveted prize for empires for millennia. From the Bronze Age to the present, its strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa made it a target for successive powers: the Mycenaean Greeks, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans, and the British. In this series, Lucas and Luna explore how this small island shaped—and was shaped by—the ambitions of great empires. They delve into the ancient city-kingdoms like Salamis and Paphos, the rise of the cult of Aphrodite (said to have been born on its shores), and the pivotal role played by figures such as the Ptolemaic rulers and the Byzantine general Heraclius. They examine the Lusignan dynasty's crusader kingdom, the Venetian fortifications at Famagusta and Kyrenia, and the Ottoman conquest of 1571. The show covers the 19th-century British administration, the bitter intercommunal strife of the 20th century, and the island's division following the 1974 Turkish invasion. Cyprus remains a living palimpsest of Hellenic, Anatolian, and Levantine influences—its cuisine, language, and architecture reflecting layers of conquest and coexistence. Why does this tiny island continue to captivate the world's attention? Lucas and Luna unpack the enduring legacy of a place that has always been, as the Greek poet put it, 'a morsel thrown to the dogs of history.'#CyprusHistory #MediterraneanEmpires #Aphrodite #LusignanKingdom #VenetianCyprus #OttomanCyprus #BritishCyprus #Famagusta #Kyrenia #Salamis #Paphos #ByzantineCyprus #PtolemaicEmpire #CrusaderStates #CyprusConflict #AncientKingdoms #IslandHistory #FexingoHistoryKeep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
