Often hailed as the first major work composed in English, rather than Latin or French, Chaucers magnum opus invites readers into a vibrant world of storytelling through the eyes of a diverse group of pilgrims journeying to Canterbury. This remarkable collection showcases Chaucers mastery of various narrative styles, reflecting the rich tradition of oral storytelling prevalent in his time. Many scholars believe that this work remained unfinished at Chaucers death. In addition to the tales, this edition includes other poems, some of which may not originally belong to him. Edited by David Laing Purves, the text is made more accessible for contemporary audiences, complete with insightful notes and explanations that enhance the reading experience. (Summary by LynneT)
