Step into the world of Samson Agonistes, a powerful dramatic poem by John Milton that draws inspiration from the poignant Old Testament tale of Samson. First published in 1671 alongside Paradise Regained, this evocative work captures Samsons final day, as he navigates the depths of despair in his blindness and captivity (eyeless in Gaza). In his solitude, he reflects on his tragic fate, receiving visits from his father Manoa, his wife Delila, and the formidable giant Harapha, among others. As the Philistines demand a public display of his strength, this leads to a heart-wrenching climax—all passion spent. Milton, who faced his own blindness and witnessed the fall of Oliver Cromwells Commonwealth, channels these profound experiences into Samsons haunting reflections. Join us as we delve into this timeless exploration of strength, loss, and resilience. (Summary by Alan Mapstone)
