Where can you listen?

Dive into the profound insights of Sir Thomas Browne, whose works Religio Medici and Hydriotaphia explore the depths of human existence and spirituality. Religio Medici (The Religion of a Doctor) offers a unique glimpse into Brownes spiritual beliefs and serves as an early psychological self-portrait. Published in 1643, this best-selling book quickly garnered controversy for its unconventional views, landing on the Papal Index Librorum Prohibitorum just two years later. While rooted in Christian faith, Brownes reflections also wander into fascinating digressions on alchemy, astrology, and physiognomy. In Hydriotaphia, published in 1658, Browne contemplates mortality following the discovery of a Roman urn burial in Norfolk. He meticulously describes the ancient artifacts and examines burial customs of his time, leading to a poignant meditation on the transient nature of life, fame, and the inevitable approach of death. With a blend of melancholia and sharp wit, Brownes exquisite baroque prose captivates readers, showcasing a masterful command of the English language. George Saintsbury hailed it as the longest piece, perhaps, of absolutely sublime rhetoric to be found in the prose literature of the world.
